The year 2007 is very special to the people at the Stein Eriksen Lodge in Deer Valley. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the lodge and the 80th birthday of its namesake, Stein Eriksen.

Time does fly! I remember clearly the beautiful day on Dec. 15, 1983 when the Stein Eriksen Lodge first opened its doors. Since then, it has become even more impressive, with mammoth rock fireplaces, 180 gorgeous guest rooms, world-class restaurants and lounge facilities and, of course, the panoramic mountain views. The lodge's Olympic Conference Center includes a 4,000 square-foot ballroom with floor-to-ceiling fireplaces.

Russ Olsen, the vice president and managing director of the Lodge, tells me that this is a very exciting time for the owners and guests who return year after year. "We aren't simply celebrating being in business for 25 years," Russ says. "We are recognizing milestones that have allowed Stein Eriksen Lodge to thrive as a leader in luxury hospitality."

My family and I are regulars at the Lodge. We love the Glitretind Restaurant that serves seasonal menus featuring regional American cuisine. The elegant setting of the slope side Glitretind offers both scenic vistas and world-class cuisine.

It has been many years since Stein Eriksen captivated the world with his skiing prowess. His handsome looks, distinctive style and superb performance gaining Olympic gold medals made him a worldwide idol. In 1994, I was privileged to attend the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Stein invited me to be his guest at the ice hockey game between Norway and Sweden. We were besieged by fans who were clamoring for Stein's autograph. I even found myself signing autographs simply because I was sitting next to the ski giant. His class and style and his way of championing excellence has given the Lodge its theme for the 25th anniversary. The festivities will be called "Championing Excellence," and guests will have the opportunity to visit the world-class spa, enjoy the excellent food, and simply bask in one of the world's great ski-destination resorts.
