Odyssey Dance Theater -- October 12, 2007
This is David Clark for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
The last thing Salt Lake City needed was another dance company, thought Derryl Yeager, as he contemplated the idea.
But Yeager, a former Ballet West principal dancer and Broadway, film and TV veteran, couldn't escape the thought that Salt Lake City had a group of talented dancers who didn't want to move to New York City or Los Angeles. He decided to create something new and different, and the result was Odyssey Dance Theater.
Odyssey Dance Theater is not your typical dance company. Instead of performing only one type of dance, performers do everything including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, modern and ballroom. The company presents more than 30 performances each year in Salt Lake City. In the 13 years since its creation, Odyssey has grown to include 24 dancers. Last spring the company made its successful New York debut.
This month the company will perform its annual "Thriller" Halloween show in Salt Lake City. "Thriller" started as a way to do an original holiday performance, and it has become so popular that a second touring company was added this year. That company will perform in Iowa, Idaho Falls, Logan, Ogden and St. George.
About three years ago Derryl teamed up with local composer Sam Cardon to create an original Christmas piece, and the result is Odyssey's "It's a Wonderful Life," based on the classic Christmas movie. The company's spring show "Shut Up and Dance," a collection of different dance numbers rotated through 12 performances, will have five world premieres this year. Mia Michaels, one of the judges of Fox's hit TV show "So You Think You Can Dance," worked with the dancers this fall to create a new piece.
Derryl tells me that both the company's talented dancers and fans who attend the performances have made Odyssey Dance Theater a success. He hopes to see Odyssey continue to make its mark with original dance and choreography.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
