This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

What is a "rumor"? According to Mr. Webster, a rumor is "gossip, usually a mixture of truth and untruth passed around by word of mouth."

Well, it is no rumor that Rumors Coffee Lounge in the Sugar House area has become a popular gathering place for fine coffee and tea, great food, comfortable ambiance, and eclectic music, art and conversation.

I enjoyed my visit with Rumors owner Franz Hoff. He and his wife, Maggie, lived in Colorado but then relocated to Massachusetts. They really missed the West and decided to look at four great Western cities in which to open a business. They came to Salt Lake City, loved the area and the people and decided to open the Rumors Coffee Lounge at 1429 S. 1100 East in November 2006.

The comfortable eatery has become a melting pot for a very diverse customer base. People love to come and enjoy the organic, fair trade coffees that are served. Maggie does much of the cooking and the burritos and enchiladas are excellent. There are quiches and special pastry items that are delicious. During my visit, customers were enjoying blueberry bread and a delicious carrot cake.

Franz provides an eclectic mix of magazines and newspapers for customers to read, and since he has a music background, he prides himself on the music selections played during the day. On Friday and Saturday evenings, live music is offered either inside or on the outside patio.

Work from local artists adorns the walls, and Franz chooses art that adds to the comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. "We want Rumors to be a place where people can come, visit, meet new friends and have wonderful food and beverage," Franz says. "It's a neighborhood place but we have people come in from all over the valley."
