Mountain Land Design -- October 19, 2005
This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
As an 18-year-old Murray High School student, Dan Devenport didn't realize how one simple but significant action could impact the rest of his life.
Eighteen years ago, Dan worked a part-time job as a driver and deliveryman for Rio Grande Supply. While delivering appliances one day, Dan found a company he believed could become a customer. He stopped and asked the manager the reason the company did not already purchase from Dan's employer.
Well, this inquiry from a teenage deliveryman with the smarts and fortitude to be going after new business impressed the manager. He called Dan's employer and said, "If this young man is assigned to be the salesman calling on me, I'll buy everything from you."
So Dan's career as a salesman began. Eighteen years later, Dan Devenport is the president and CEO of Mountain Land Design, one of the area's finest providers of fixtures, appliances and hardware for your kitchen and bath.
Mountain Land Design started as a small boutique in Park City. Dan was selling General Electric appliances to the company when the owner asked Dan if he would like to become a partner. Dan bought an equity position and he and his brother Joe became deeply involved in the business. Seven years later, the Devenports bought out the partner and began to expand the company. They opened a spectacular showroom at 2345 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City and a showroom in Provo. A Layton facility is now under construction, and plans are being finalized for a new St. George outlet.
Why the great growth? As Dan explains, Mountain Land Design carries the finest products available. Indeed, I saw Wolf, KitchenAid, Sub Zero, Viking and Bosch appliances and Rohl plumbing fixtures as I wandered through the showroom. Dan also notes that the company is a full-service provider that sells, delivers, installs and does service coordination. It's a wonderful place!
Yes, isn't it amazing what a young man can accomplish with a little initiative?
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
