Hatch Family Chocolates -- November 19, 2004
This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
I have a sweet tooth. Every night at about 9 p.m., I just have to have a piece of candy or a bowl of ice cream. I don't think I could go to bed without my nightly "fix."
So naturally I enjoyed my visit with Steve Hatch at the Hatch Family Chocolate store and factory on Fourth Ave. and E St. in Salt Lake. The popular "goodie" store has become a regular stop for many who relish in great candy, ice cream and other sweets.
Steve's grandmother, Hazel, started making candy when she was 13 years old. Her son, Jerry, learned the skill while still a young man, but never really tried to market the great confections until he retired from his social work career.
It was natural for Jerry's son, Steve, to carry on the Hatch family tradition of making candy. He obviously loves the business, and his immaculate store, gregarious personality and desire to please his customers compliment the candy-making operation.
Katie Masterson joined Steve in 2001 as a pastry chef and primary candy maker. With a long background of baking in the Chicago area, she makes cakes and pastries for special orders and catering jobs. She and Steve have since married, and they hope to soon add a complete line of her scrumptious pastries to the selection of delectables currently offered.
Ice Cream is a staple in the Hatch family. They offer Farr Better Ice Cream and Russell's Ice Cream, as well as a list of specialty coffees, teas, Italian Sodas and other beverages.
A colleague from the bank, Arthur Franks, accompanied me on my visit. He insisted I try the Carmel Krispies, a sophisticated version of the Rice Krispy Treats that our kids and grandkids love. However, this version is made with homemade marshmallow crème and caramel from Grandma Hatch's recipe. It was decadent! Delicious!
The dark chocolate shell that hardens on ice cream is again a special Hatch recipe. This keeps bringing the customers back. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Hatch Family Chocolates.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
